Water safety and security.

Water safety and security are fundamental to human development and well-being. They involve the protection of water resources and drinking water from contamination, pollution, and disasters, as well as the provision of adequate and acceptable quality water for sustaining livelihoods, health, and socio-economic development. It  also linked to other global challenges such as food, energy, climate change, and peace

Water safety is defined as as availability of the resource in sufficient quantity and quality to ensure socio-economic development, livelihoods, health and ecosystems.

Water safety and quality can be ensured by using a comprehensive risk assessment and risk management approach that encompasses all steps in a drinking-water supply chain, from catchment to consumer. This approach is called water safety planning (WSP), and it involves identifying and prioritizing hazards and risks, implementing and monitoring control measures, and verifying and reviewing the effectiveness of the WSP.

Water safety and security are also influenced by human behavior and awareness.

A focus on household water quality ensures that potable water, collected from a safe source, remains uncontaminated through the point of use. How does water become the next economic deciding factor.

Water is a vital resource for human survival and economic development.  The value of water to agriculture, industry, business, and energy can be assessed through an economic input-output perspective that variously quantifies returns or benefits, such as employment, product value per unit of water, or product value-added  . Agriculture uses the major share (69%) of global freshwater resources, and food security has long been a challenge for human societies. Global demand for food and other agricultural products is projected to increase by 50% between 2012 and 2050, driven by population growth. In many regions of the world, water for food production is a major driver of environmental degradation, including depletion of aquifers, reduction of river flows, degradation of wildlife habitats, and pollution .Industry and energy combined withdraw 19% of the world’s freshwater. However, it is important to recognize that the overall economic productivity of water in the energy, industry, and business sectors leads also to various co-benefits, such as job creation, product value per unit of water, or product value-added.

In summary, water is becoming an increasingly important factor in economic decision-making, and its value is being recognized in various sectors. However, there is still a need for better valuation and management of water resources to ensure sustainable development and equitable access to this vital resource.

Culture and water. A look through a scientific lens.

Water is a vital resource for human survival and economic development. It is also a significant part of many cultures and religions.  Water has cultural and spiritual significance that varies depending on the culture and context .

Water is often seen as a symbol of purity, life, and renewal in many cultures. For example, in Hinduism, the Ganges River is considered sacred and is believed to have purifying powers . Similarly, in Buddhism, water is used in purification rituals and is seen as a symbol of clarity and calmness . In many indigenous cultures, water is considered a living entity and is revered as a source of life and healing .

In addition to its cultural and spiritual significance, water also plays a crucial role in shaping human societies and economies. As I mentioned earlier, water is a vital resource for agriculture, industry, and energy, and its value can be assessed through an economic input-output perspective . In summary, water is not only a vital resource for human survival and economic development but also a significant part of many cultures and religions. Its cultural and spiritual significance varies depending on the culture and context. Better valuation and management of water resources are needed to ensure sustainable development and equitable access to this vital resource.
